Karen Russo Studio
Clay is my preferred medium for its malleability, capacity for transformation, and direct connection to the earth. From the mountains to the sea, the Pacific Northwest inspires me.
My sculptures are a tapestry of form, texture, and color. In clay and paint, stories emerge as they are etched into the surface. I work with paradoxical themes which depict women whom originate from different eras and geographical origins. They explore the tensions of the feminine experience: strength and contemplation, youth and aging, joy and grief. Through these maternal archetypes, I hope to express an eternal optimism for the human spirit in this beautiful, delicate, and chaotic world.
Each sculpture is hand-built from a solid mass of clay cut into multiple sections: hollowed out, compressed, reassembled. I fire in an electric kiln. In earth tones I work in underglaze, casein, and acrylic washes. I also used dry pigments.
