Melanie Smith is a sculptor and ceramic artist living in Portland, Oregon. She grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and started ceramics at a very young age. She moved to Arcata, California where she attended Humboldt State University and studied ceramics and botany.
She has always had a love for ceramics since she was a young child. It was during college in California where she first fell in love with firing wood kilns. Since moving to Portland, Oregon in 2018, she has become an active artist firing the East Creek Anagama, in Willamina Oregon. Her favorite part about wood fired ceramics is the long process of firing the kiln, where she spends over a week chopping and adding wood to fire the kiln and monitoring the fire inside with an amazing community of artists.
She also enjoys firing soda kilns, and frequently likes to fire her work twice, in both the wood and soda kilns. When she is not in the studio, she is working on gardening and hiking in nature.
