Fern Hill Pottery
I make functional soda/salt-fired pottery. My hope is that the pots are quietly friendly and fun to use.
Porcelain is my clay of choice. I especially like patterning with slips to contrast porcelain’s coolness with the warm orange colors of slips. I use paper patterns on leather hard pots and this allows me to brush on multiple slips. The paper resists the slips, leaving raw clay which is then glazed by the atmosphere in the soda/salt- firing. I’ve been making lots of plates of various sizes that lend themselves to this technique. Plaids, argyles and polka dots are all fair game.
