I grew-up in the 60’s with a mom who’s hobby was hand-building ceramic animals. Adopting the clay itch, I randomly took pottery classes over the years wherever I lived. When my mom was in her 80s, I convinced her to move near me in Portland and we converted my garage into a studio so she could create and build her creatures while played on the wheel.
After my mom passed and I retired from my environmental job, I gravitated to the studio, happy with my hands in clay. I am drawn to make simple, imperfect functional wares thrown on the wheel and hand altered. I am delighted when one of my pieces makes it’s way into someone’s daily life—a morning mug, a cozy dinner bowl, a vase for posies.
I post on Instagram and sell pieces via my website masonclay.com, at periodic studio sales, and by request. To help give back to the community, 25% of my sales are donated to organizations that are responding to those in need.
