ARTIST STATEMENT

The coolness of the clay is enticing as I roll, pinch, and press the clay with my fingers. Working the clay, the shape evolves, morphing into its final form. My work is whimsical, stylized, a bit edgy, but always designed to create an emotional connection for the observer.

I create animal shapes with anthropomorphic elements. My characters face fears, perform movements, or demonstrate issues creating fear in our world. A cute animal dealing with a dystopian reality creates a dichotomy which I love.

Each piece is hand built using a stoneware clay. When strong enough to candle, textures and clay embellishments are added then bisque fired. Next is glazing and one last firing. Lastly, the after-firing details are added, which bring out the character's personality and/or situation.

A bright smile or a knowing look lets me know my work is successful.

Working with clay is my second career. Teaching middle school for thirty-two years was my first.
