ARTIST STATEMENT

I'm a studio potter living in Eugene, Oregon since 1989. My background as an artist is eclectic and unique, partly because of my diverse ethnic heritage and cultural influences: African-American and Native American on my father’s side, Dutch and English on my mother’s. My parents moved to Brazil in 1958, where I grew up. My love affair with pottery began in Brazil while still in middle school! Today, I derive much inspiration from the natural world with its beauty, colors, shapes, patterns and raw materials.

My work is characterized by its functionality and the durable qualities of high-fire stoneware, combined with an aesthetic pursuit of grace, beauty and a touch of whimsy! I use glazes, slips and wax-resist techniques in a variety of ways to create unique decorative patterns and designs. I greatly enjoy making functional table and house wares, which complement my interests in culinary and gardening.
