The Oregon Weaver

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a weaver with four looms. Two looms are dedicated to weaving yardage. The other smaller looms are for scarves. I work in two studios. One is for weaving, the other for sewing.

I look for ways to use color, texture and design in a garment to tell a Northwest story. I live on the Oregon Coast and draw inspiration from what I see.

My most recent work uses pin tuck details to "draw" leaves and twigs onto the handwoven fabric. I also use an edge technique which I developed to bind two handwoven edges.

Recently, I have mentored with a local quilter. I rent her long arm machine and with her guidance have learned how to quilt onto my handwoven fabric. I use motifs that suggest the ocean such as pebbles, waves, breakers and kelp.

Then I consider the human form and design, cut and sew garments that will tell my Northwest story. My work is sold through juried art fairs across the country or on my website: www.theoregonweaver.com.
